In March, as with every other month, the interns hosted their monthly debate. The chosen topic this time was “Should food labelling be mandated by law in Nigeria?” Those against the motion raised notable points, emphasizing the potential negative impact on small and medium-sized businesses. They highlighted how such a law could automatically raise the cost of food for the average person, exacerbating the already high rate of food insecurity in the country. Additionally, they pointed out the current tediousness of the food labelling process as outlined by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). On the other hand, the proponents argued that the primary goal of this law is to safeguard consumer rights and ensure transparency from food vendors regarding their products. They also emphasized the health implications of citizens consuming products that lack proper labelling. The debate concluded with the opposing team claiming victory with a total of 70 points, while the proposing team fell short with 60 points.
